Why Vision Is Important To Success

A little while ago I was meeting with a prospective client.  I asked this client one of my favorite questions, “What is your vision for your business?”  She looked at me and said, “I don’t have a vision. What is your vision?”  Nobody has ever turned that around on me before, but I was happy to share with her my thoughts about the people part of my vision.  I described my vision of an organization where everyone on the team wants to grow and they find that there are many opportunities within the organization to learn and improve their skills.  When it is time for them to leave my organization, they leave with improved skills and are ready to move up in their career.

We hear a lot about the importance of having a vision for our business. I am often asked if it is really important to have a vision for your business or organization. The simple answer is yes. Quite simply a vision is where you see your business in the future.

If you don’t truly know where you want your business to be five, ten, fifteen years from now how are you going to grow and get better? It is like driving around in a circle with no destination.

The other question I often hear is, “Okay, I have an idea for my vision. Do I really need to write it down?” Yes, of course. Write it down and review it regularly. Share it with your employees. Use your vision to guide your decisions.

There was a study done last year by The State of Business Owner. They found that businesses that had written vision statements grew 50% faster in 2011 and were more optimistic about the future than the businesses that did not have a written vision statement – 50%! That is incredible.

Are you ready to grow your business? What is your vision?
